ENG 104 Blog - Nathan Ten

1. I feel like I spent most of my labor on an org meeting. I haven’t been getting much sleep recently so when we had a KSA meeting it was very draining. I volunteered to present kind of last minute and had to learn about the topic and have things to say about 2 hours before the presentation. Although it isn’t a class and it was quite casual, I still felt that I had a responsibility to have things in order and have it be a good meeting. 2. I think what stands out to me is how I felt during that time. Usually I am a very humorous and joking person that rarely quiets down or gets serious but when I was tired and and felt responsible for something I matured up and it just felt different. 3. I think that I feel okay about my labor but I should probably just get more sleep so I can be more energized and alert when doing those things.

We had a presentation from grace yoo and we learned ore about first year experience programs and gave our feedback on some of the problems in sfstate. The first activity we did on Monday with grace was quite interesting and set the tone for the presentation. I think that our work was pretty efficient since we structured out how our project for this class was going to be done. I think that so far we have a good plan and as long as we go through with it I think that the project will turn out great. One obstacle that I can see is rain, since I would like to shoot outside and it’s much harder to find students inside buildings to interview since they are usually going to class. But if the weather is decent on Monday and Tuesday then it should turn out ok.

I think that grace’s presentation was a very optimistic and interesting point of view of the first year students experience. I didn’t really connect with her experience considering it was quite different, she went to a different school and that was many years before we did, when tutition was cheaper and things were different. Her first activity was also very interesting and I was surprised that she asked us about our purpose in life. To be completely honest the presentation was not what I expected it to be. I thought that we were going to voice our opinions and our problems about the school and the school systems and have her use our feedback to try and better it. But instead it was more about her experience and what her first year experience was and also what the campus already has to help first years. It was an interesting presentation and it was different from expected.

Housing on and near campus is an important topic to me because I plan to move out to sf next year with some friends. I commute from San Mateo and it’s not that bad but it gets tiring driving to and from my home and because I work in San Mateo I also have to rush back for work.

My first week back at school has been interesting. It has not been the best week to be honest. First day of school I came early to try and find free parking and make it to class. Little did I know it was the fourth Monday of the month. So I parked and when I went back to move my car I received a ticket. It kind of just ruined my day and my week and I still have to pay the ticket. The next few days have kind of been a blur. My paranoia of getting another ticket has pushed me to sleepover and just find overnight parking instead of sleeping at home in San Mateo. Because I have been driving to and from San Mateo to sf late at night and waking up early to go to class I have been getting really tired. Included in all of this is the fact that I still have work. Work is not too bad but it’s just annoying to have to drive all the way back to San Mateo to work. I’m hoping to move out here next year and find a job here instead.
