ENG 104 Blog - Nathan Ten

I have not done a visual analysis essay before this essay was my first time. I think that the questions/guidelines we created as groups really helped me flesh out my essay and give more direction to it rather than just a short analyzation. I think it helped me answer questions that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I think finding information about the art piece and about the artists was hard. But in the end I just ended up putting less info about that and more about what I felt the picture was about. I think that the details and visuals of the painting are more important than the facts behind it. This essay did not change my daily habits. I feel that I am usually an observant person when I want to be. When walking around I like to look around and see whats happening around me. People watching is a thing I do when I'm sitting and doing nothing. Just observing other people and thinking about what their doing and how their lives are so different is interesting. ...

Article from Medium: The Loneliness of an Ethnic Name by Yeri Yun This Medium article is referring  to another  article from 2014,  “How We Pronounce Student Names and Why It Matters” I think that this article relates to my visual in an oddly specific way. While my visual doesn't really have much to do with pronunciation of names, it does relate to how ethnic and cultural diversity are important in a school environment. Both the visual and the article from medium kind of show that learning about different cultures and their history is a very important idea for teachers and students alike. Although the visual has a much more broad idea to how people should learn about their own and other peoples cultures, the article goes deeper into detail showing how even learning the language and the names of people in different culture can have a huge impact on people. I think that this quote is very true especially when thinking about what type of social and political climate we are in at the moment. Right now the topic of fake news and media affecting how people think and act is a big part of our lives. If we don't take in what this guide about visual literacy is telling us, then we may be affected by the media around us in a negative way. We must analyze, think critically, and reflect on everything we see around us because we are surrounded by media and new information everyday. We take in all of this info and media so we are bound to be affected by it, it's up to us to decide how we are affected and what we do with the information by reflect and having a good sense of visual literacy.
